1. Creating
the Characters:
a. This
includes the owl, monster, and hand.
b. I
will be creating the models of the characters for sure in Toon Boom. This
program works incredibly well with layers and making puppets, which is the
style I want to do.
i.
Set up with the front, three-quarter, and back
views (Character sheets created in ATEC 320).
ii.
Create line layers.
iii.
Color them in.
iv.
Set the rotation points so they animate nicely.
v.
Create all the other assets for the characters,
including extra eyes, hands, etc.
vi.
Save them in the template area in the library.
c. Do
some test animations with them
i.
Make sure all the movements work.
ii.
Maybe even test a few clips, change as needed.
2. Creating
the Environments:
a. I
don’t know if I will be creating the environments in Photoshop or Toon Boom. I
want it to be vector art, so that I can zoom way in, like I need to, and not
worry about loosing quality.
b. Outside
Window:
i.
This will all be on one layer, I think. The text
will be on another layer, all separate for the words come on in different
times.
1. Not
sure if I want to put words in while composting in After Effects or putting it
in in Toon Boom.
c. Bedroom:
i.
This will be in many layers, as I plan on
animating them separately to help add depth and stylize the animation.
ii.
I want the whole bedroom to be one images that
the camera pans through.
iii.
The book will also have numerous layers, being
the back and the pages that turn.
iv.
Created in Toon Boom with line and color art
layers.
d. Window
Inside Bedroom:
i.
Will all be one layer for what is inside the
room. The outide through the glass will be on its own layer, blurry, for it
isn’t the focus.
ii.
Will add in the words and owl later.
e. Outside:
i.
There will be a slight pan with the zoom on the
outside scene, so I want to create all the details on different layers.
ii.
As I pan through, things in the back will pan
slower than those in the front.
iii.
Created in Toon Boom with line and color art
layers.
f.
Inside the Monster’s Eye:
i.
This will be created in Toon Boom.
ii.
I’m hoping they have a rigging system that can
help with cracks. I feel like they might.
iii.
I will create the cracks, and have different
forms of the crack, so as the animation moves on, the cracks get worse.
iv.
Creating it into the hand will be interesting.
It will either fade into the next form, or I will create multiple drawings as
it fades into the hand shape.
v.
Hand will be rigged to walk around and move most
of the fingers.
g. Door:
i.
The door will be on its own layers, and the
whiteness surrounding it will be another.
ii.
There will be grey behind the door, so that when
it opens, we can see its empty.
iii.
I think I might either animate the lines to make
it appear like an opening door OR
iv.
Go into Maya and animate a rotating door
opening.
h. Outside
Once More:
i.
The inside of the door will then be transparent,
so that the camera can push through to see outside. It will be grass and some
mountains in the back. Maybe a few flowers.
i.
Outside the Window:
i.
The outside shot of the window towards the end
will be visually the same as it was before. This one will have the window pane
on another layer, so that it may be opened or closed as needed.
ii.
The monster will be added in.
iii.
As will the owl.
j.
Straight on to the Desk:
i.
Same visually as the desk was before.
ii.
I will use a mask in Toon Boom maybe to mask out
the monsters lower body as he enters the book. The desk will be its own layer,
as will the desk chair.
k. Close
up to the Book:
i.
In the final shot, there is a close up to the
book as the monsters closes it.
ii.
The book cover will be on its own layer, so that
it may be easily rotated to appear closed.
iii.
The monsters hand will be on its own layer, like
a puppet arm.
iv.
The book will slam closed fast, so that it will
blur with speed. This will cut down time trying to animate his hand closing the
book.
3. Starting
to Animate:
a. Once
all the assets are created and finalized, I will begin animating.
b. Each
clip will be animated separately in Toon Boom.
c. The
clips are defines between where they are shot and when the transitions are.
This is how I will do them:
i.
Scene 1 Shot 1
ii.
Scene 1 Shot 1 – Scene 1 Shot 4
iii.
Scene 1 Shot 5 – Scene 1 Shot 9 (ii and iii
might be together)
iv.
Scene 1 Shot 10 – Scene 1 Shot 12
v.
Scene 2 Shot 1 – Scene 2 Shot 2
vi.
Scene 2 Shot 3 – Scene 2 Shot 6 (before crack
starts to change)
vii.
Scene 2 Shot 7 – Scene 2 Shot 10
viii.
Scene 2 Shot 11 – Scene 2 Shot 14
ix.
Scene 3 Shot 1 – Scene 3 Shot 3
x.
Scene 3 Shot 4
xi.
Scene 3 Shot 5 – Scene 3 Shot 8
d. Please
check out the Storyboard to see the shots I am describing.
e. This
is still unsure, might change in the future.
4. Compositing
in After Effects:
a. Bring
in all the rendered clips from Toon Boom into After Effects and render
together.
b. May
or may not add the words in yet. Up to discuss.
c. Will
add in credits and intro was already created in Toon Boom.
5. Add
in Audio:
a. I’m
thinking just adding in a music track.
b. Either
I will learn to cut my own together or buy a song to use.
c. Will
ask for assistance on this part.
6. Final
Render:
a. Once
the audio and visual work is all done, I will render it all out into a final
piece.
b. Then
put on YouTube on my channel, along with my site and blogger.
I have learned a lot of
technicalities I will face while working in the mock up phases. I have a few
concerns about how to do some stuff, as you have seen throughout this write up.
Hopefully, you can get back to me on these. I wanted to just do all cut out
animation, but it looks like to create smooth transitions, like the hand
transforming and the pages turning, I may need to draw them out gradually. This
will take more time than I thought it would, but should be worth it. I also was
wondering what you thought about doing a choppy animation that only runs so
many frames per second? Like, the transitions will run smoothly, along with the
zooms and stuff, however, the characters movements and the smoke will come in
with like 6-12 frames per second. I also though making the words alter slightly
ever so often frame-wise would be cool. Not a whole bunch that it confuses the
viewer. I’ll try to find an example. I also do not yet know where to put in the
words. They are a big part of the animation, and I feel like After Effects has
better ways to animate these in. Overall, I have learned a lot throughout the
mock up phase and writing this up. Let me know what you think of it.
