Where the Sidewalk
Ends
“Where the Sidewalk Ends” has come
incredibly far since where it was standing five weeks ago. I have made a bunch
of progress on the project. I changed a lot, and the only things I really kept
from my original idea was the monster and the poem. Everything else changed
rather dramatically, from a creepy, worn animation to a 1950s style cut out
animation. I was happen to get this changes out of the way now, before we began
preproduction and the change would have severely hindered my progress in making
the animation. I revised quite a bit this term, and all the work can be seen on
my website and my blog. I changed the script, the art style, and the story
overall.
Changes to the Script
Changing
the script was the first thing that needed to get done. The script is what it
telling the story, and I really needed this first in order to be sure that I
could mass a storyboard out of it properly. It is four to five pages long,
however, the animation is not going to follow the 1 page = 1 minute rule. The
script has a lot of detail work in it, like how things will look or enter into
frame. I feel that the overall animation will maybe be 2 minutes, tops. I am
hoping for a little less, but we will see what comes, I suppose. Anyway, I
changed the script for the better. Instead of actual scenes, it will be more
like an animated slideshow. It will be a shot, then a transition to another
shot with the new text. There will be plenty of outside animations around the
words to make the piece come together. They will have transitions varying from
simple pans, to quick blurs, to fast zooms. The script is what helped me decide
how the animation will happen in a better and more time manageable way.
What’s the Style?
Now that I had
this new script, I had to decide what style I wanted. I could have kept the
old, demented look. However, I though changing that up might be for the better.
I really did like the old style, however, I feel that style can stay with that
version of the poem, and I can later animate that. Anyway, I decided to go with
an animation format that I always thought was very blocky and stylistic, and
that was the animation from the 1950’s. The characters at this time were always
of interesting shapes, and the animators loved to play around with their statures
and personalities. Both the owl and the monster were based off of some
characters I looked up from this time period, and shaped them to be like that. Big
noses and stout bodies seemed to be the pattern then. As for the props, I
looked up pieces from the 1950’s and 1960’s, and chose what best fit what I
wanted. Overall, this style change will make the animation more cheerful, yet
at some points I can make the animation dark, like when it gets to the monster
and the city.
The Story Overall
With this
class, I revised the story and animation overall. The story is no longer about
a boy leaving his home and finding a magical place over the edge of the cliff.
That story, however is one I still like and will come back to eventually (I
know I keep saying that, but I am just as excited to work on the old project as
a potential 3D animation as I am this new one). Now, the animation has to real
main character. It just has the camera following around and going through this
world that is surrounded by this poem. It seems to be following this bird, who
flies around and used his feathers to show the viewer the world it lives in. It
also really isn’t an animation that follows the basic plots of a story. I mean,
it does have the climax and such, but it isn’t like “once upon a time.” I feel
that should make for an interesting and unique animation. The monster still
plays a big part in this animation, though he isn’t as intimidating as he was
before. He is more simple, and resembles a business man in a sense. Maybe he represents
the dark city with pollution in the air
and in businesses. Overall, I feel that the story has changed for the
better.
Conclusion
Overall, I
have made many revisions to the original story that I feel are for the better
in every aspect. I can get it done in a better time frame, and the style of
animation that I want will go nicely with this design I have going. Redoing the
script completely opened up a whole new vision of what I could do. I could
change the style and the animation overall, and I did. I made it into a quirky,
1950’s style and cannot wait to get started on animating this. I feel this will
help me in the long run for many reasons. For one, it is really going to help
me get this animation done in the correct time frame we have. I would rather
have extra time to make the animation better than to be rushing the ending
product. I also feel that the style will allow me to get more creative with
color and such. My old animation was encompassed around being a black and white
animation, with important stuff in color. Interesting design, but couldn’t play
with color schemes. Overall, all these revisions were made for the better.
